Swansea City have secured the long-term future of Matt Grimes, with the midfielder extending his contract at the Liberty Stadium.

Grimes has been with Swansea for the bulk of his short career so far, having arrived in Wales after an impressive impact at Exeter City.

He’s had loan spells elsewhere over the years, but has established himself under Graham Potter this season.

Now, the Swans have announced on their official website that Grimes has agreed a contract extension, committing himself to the club until the summer of 2022.

The 23-year-old, whose former deal ran out in the summer, has featured on 16 occasions this season, including 15 times in the Championship, proving his versatility at both left-back and in midfield.

His form has helped Potter’s side to just outside the play-off places after 16 fixtures.

Swansea are just three points adrift of Nottingham Forest, who currently occupy the final play-off place.

Potter will be hoping that his side can close that gap this weekend when they visit a struggling Bolton Wanderers ahead of the international break.

The Verdict

This is another good move for Swansea, who have done well to secure the future of a number of young players in recent weeks.

The club needs to solidify back in the second-tier under Potter and securing the future of players like Grimes will be key.

If a core of players can gel in the next few years, Swansea could be a force once again.
