Sunderland have announced the signing of Glenn Loovens, with the experienced defender agreeing a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light.

It has been confirmed this evening that Loovens has agreed terms with the Black Cats, with the free agent dropping into League One after his release from Sheffield Wednesday at the end of the 2017/18 campaign.

After spells with the likes of Feyenoord and Celtic, Loovens made a name for himself at Hillsborough, where he spent four-and-a-half-years.

During that time at Hillsborough, Loovens made 150 appearances for the Owls, captaining the side for long periods of that spell.

The 34-year-old centre-back led the Owls to back-to-back play-off campaigns in the Championship in 2016 and 2017, proving to be part of Wednesday’s most successful spell in their recent history.

However, last season, Loovens saw his football limited, as Sheffield Wednesday struggled in the Championship.

Loovens made 23 appearances across all competitions, including 20 in the Championship.

He now links up with Sunderland, becoming part of Jack Ross’ revolution at the Stadium of Light.

After successive relegations, Sunderland are now preparing themselves for life in League One next season.

The Verdict

This could be a shrewd piece of business, with Loovens bringing plenty of experience and quality to the Stadium of Light.

Of course, injuries have prevented him from making an impact in the last 12 months, but stepping down into League One should give the 34-year-old a new challenge.

This is a really encouraging piece of business for Ross.
