Wahbi Khazri has completed a move away from Sunderland this evening, linking up with St Etienne on a permanent contract.

Sunderland have moved to announce Khazri’s departure, with the Tunisian heading to St Etienne, who he has agreed a deal with until the summer of 2022.

The 27-year-old has been part of Sunderland’s squad since January 2016, with the midfielder making 42 appearances for the Black Cats during his time with the club.

Over the last year he spent time on-loan in the French top-flight, albeit with Rennes.

During his season-long loan in Ligue 1, Khazri made 24 league appearances, returning nine goals and a further two assists.

Since then, he has represented Tunisia at the 2018 World Cup, returning from Russia with two goals and two assists from his three appearances.

After returning from Russia, Khazri has resolved his club future, returning to France and leaving the Stadium of Light.

Khazri departs Sunderland with the Blacks Cats facing life in League One, after they suffered relegation to the third-tier of English football last season.

Jack Ross is now in charge at the Stadium of Light preparing Sunderland for the season ahead.

The Verdict

Khazri was always going to be heading for the exit door at the Stadium of Light this summer.

The 27-year-old has struggled during his time at the Stadium of Light and a move abroad is best for his career.

For Sunderland, this is another good step in the right direction ahead of League One.
