Elliot Embleton has left Sunderland, with the youngster heading to Grimsby Town on a short-term loan deal.

Sunderland have moved to announce the deal on their official website this afternoon, with the 19-year-old joining Grimsby on loan until January 6.

So far in his senior career for Sunderland, Embleton has made four senior appearances, having made his debut against Wolves last season in the Championship.

Embleton’s last senior appearance for the Black Cats came earlier in August, with Jack Ross handing him 61 minutes in the 2-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup.

Now, with Sunderland motoring along nicely in League One, the Black Cats have agreed to his departure 24 hours ahead of the transfer deadline.

Embleton links up with a Grimsby side who have endured a tough start to the League Two season.

Michael Jolley’s side have five points from the opening five fixtures of the season, which leaves them in 17th.

However, Grimsby are now without a win since August 11, with their last three points coming against Macclesfield Town earlier this month.

Embleton could make his Grimsby debut on Saturday against Yeovil Town.

The Verdict

Embleton will learn a lot out on loan in League Two, with the teenager set to earn experience he wouldn’t have got at Sunderland.

Of course, he has to earn the right to play, but Sunderland will back his ability to break into the first-team.

In January, Sunderland have the luxury of reassessing the loan deal to make sure all parties are getting the best out of it.
