Manchester United striker James Wilson has opted to join Aberdeen rather than move on loan to Sunderland.

Aberdeen have confirmed on the club's official website that they have completed the signing of Wilson on a season-long loan from Man United.

The England under-21 international has decided to move to the Scottish Premiership, despite Sunderland being in the hunt to sign him on loan.

The 22-year-old has scored four goals for Manchester United's senior sides, but has only managed six goals in three loan spells in the Championship.

Five of those came during his first spell at Brighton and Hove Albion, before a goalless stint with Derby County and a spell which yielded just one goal at Sheffield United.

Wilson's progress has been hampered by injury but he will hope to kick on with Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen.

The Verdict

This is a bit of a blow for Sunderland, but there are no guarantees that Wilson would have been a success at the Stadium of Light.

With a relatively poor goal scoring record in the Championship, he might not have had the confidence to succeed at Sunderland.

Plus, the Black Cats have Charlie Wyke to return from injury, Josh Maja has scored two in two and Jerome Sinclair is a promising young striker.
