Sunderland misfit Didier Ndong has left the Stadium of Light after reaching an amicable agreement with the club, according to their official statement.

The Gabonese midfielder refused to return to pre-season training and when he eventually surfaced, he was sacked for a breach of contract. The situation has been one of the few clouds hanging over a solid start to the season for the Black Cats.

In their official statement they say:

"Sunderland AFC has reached an agreement with Didier Ndong for his departure on amicable terms. As of 8 October 2018, he is no longer an employee of the club. There is an agreement with the player for a payment by way of compensation upon his signing for a new club."

That means that not only was Ndong sacked, but that he will compensate the Black Cats as and when he signs for a new club.

The 24-year old became the club's record signing in August 2016, joining for a fee of £13.6m from French side Lorient. He made just 54 appearances for the Black Cats and was forced to leave the UK after being sacked due to work permit difficulties.

The Verdict

Sunderland fans won't be sad to see the back of Ndong who has behaved appallingly since their relegation out of the Premier League.

News that he has to compensate them will come as some comfort, although it is highly unlikely to be anywhere near the £13.6m they splashed out on the misfit back in 2016.
