Stoke City have swooped to sign Adam Federici, with the goalkeeper arriving as Gary Rowett’s third summer signing.

After the arrivals of Oghenekaro Etebo and Benik Afobe, confirmation came yesterday that Federici had signed from AFC Bournemouth, with the experienced goalkeeper agreeing a two-year deal at the bet365 Stadium to take him through until the summer of 2020.

After Lee Grant’s departure, the 33-year-old’s arrival strengthens Rowett’s goalkeeping options ahead of Stoke’s opening game of the 2018/19 campaign against Leeds United on August 5th.

Federici played the bulk of his career with Reading, where he made over 200 league appearances, earning himself a solid reputation.

He has also spent time with Southend United, Bristol City and Bournemouth, making a total of 272 appearances across all competitions.

However, his three-year spell with Bournemouth has seen Federici’s game time limited, with the Australian international featuring on just 17 occasions across all competitions for the South Coast outfit.

The goalkeeper, capped on 16 times by Australia, comes in alongside Jack Butland at Stoke, who are preparing for a return to the Sky Bet Championship under Gary Rowett.

The Verdict

This is shrewd business from Rowett, who has strengthened his goalkeeping options following Grant’s departure.

It remains to be seen if Federici is first choice, but he provides an experienced head in Stoke’s squad nevertheless.

Rowett’s squad is taking shape, with Stoke looking strong ahead of a Championship return.
