Confirmed: Stoke City and Liverpool finalise deal for 26-year-old

Xherdan Shaqiri has completed his move from Stoke City to Liverpool, with the Swiss winger making an instant return to the Premier League.

An announcement came last night from Stoke and Liverpool that a deal had been agreed for the 26-year-old to make the switch to Anfield.

Shaqiri leaves Championship-bound Stoke after three years with the club, linking up with Liverpool on a long-term contract, for a fee that has remained undisclosed.

The 26-year-old has spent three years in the Premier League, making 84 league appearances for the Potters and returning 15 goals from the wing.

Despite having the quality of Shaqiri on board, Stoke struggled last season in the Premier League, eventually suffering relegation back to the second-tier.

During the course of the 2017/18 campaign, Shaqiri featured in 36 of Stoke’s 38 Premier League fixtures, with the winger returning eight goals and seven assists for the Potters, despite their struggles.

Since then, he has spent time in Russia with Switzerland, playing a key role in their run to the Last 16 of the World Cup.

Shaqiri featured in all four of their fixtures, scoring one goal and registering an assist.

The Verdict

Shaqiri’s departure was inevitable this summer, with Liverpool clearly happy to take a chance on the 26-year-old.

The Premier League hasn’t seen the best of Shaqiri yet, but that could well come at Liverpool, if he can gel quickly with Jurgen Klopp’s side.

For all parties involved, it’s good that this deal hasn’t dragged on longer than it should have.
