Daniel Pudil has agreed a new one-year contract with Sheffield Wednesday, keeping him at Hillsborough for the 2018/19 campaign.

The defender’s deal had been set to end in the coming weeks, but Wednesday have moved to announce their retained list on the club’s official website, confirming that Pudil had signed on for another year.

The 32-year-old’s spell with the Owls will now stretch into a fourth year, giving him the opportunity to build on 102 appearances he has already made for the club.

Pudil was part of Wednesday’s play-off appearances during the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons, as well as featuring regularly during this year’s disappointing campaign.

The left-back has made 31 appearances across all competitions this season for the Owls, featuring regularly since Jos Luhukay replaced Carlos Carvalhal at Hillsborough.

Following the announcement of his new deal, Pudil will now be available to Luhukay next season.

Wednesday have also moved to confirm that Sean Clare, Atdhe Nuhiu, George Hirst, Dan Wallis, Warren Clarke and Jack Lee have all been offered new deals, whilst a number of others will depart Hillsborough.

Glenn Loovens’ spell with the Owls will come to an end in the summer, whilst Ross Wallace and Jake Kean will also leave.

The Verdict

Pudil’s form post-Christmas has earned him this contract extension, with the 32-year-old in excellent form under Luhukay.

Featuring in an unfamiliar centre-back role in a 3-5-2 formation, Pudil has done well and will prove to be a valuable player next season, should Luhukay stick with this system.

Wednesday’s early retained list shows that Luhukay is preparing himself for a huge summer at Hillsborough.
