Sheffield United have confirmed via their official Twitter account (@SUFC_tweets), the arrival of Ricky Holmes from Charlton Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

Holmes arrives at Bramall Lane on a two-and-a-half year deal, with the Blades landing the midfielder’s signature having missed out on him during the summer transfer window.

According to the Evening Standard, the 30-year-old is making the switch form the Valley to South Yorkshire for £400k, ending an 18-month association with Charlton that has seen him flourish in Sky Bet League One.

Over the course of his Charlton career, Holmes has bagged 19 league goals for the club, as well as registering a further 12 assists from his 58 appearances.

So far this season Holmes has six goals and six assists to his name, playing a key role for Karl Robinson’s side in their quest for promotion back to the Championship.

Holmes leaves the Addicks sixth in the League One table, linking up with Chris Wilder again and joining the Blades’ push for back-to-back promotions.

Wilder’s side moved back into the Championship’s top-six over the weekend, despite finding themselves held to goalless draw in Friday night’s Steel City derby with Sheffield Wednesday.

The Verdict

Finally Wilder has managed to get Holmes to Bramall Lane, and the Sheffield United boss will be keen for the midfielder to continue his impressive form.

Where Holmes fits into Wilder’s 3-5-2 formation remains to be seen, however, over his time with Charlton he has proved to a real creative cog at the Valley.

Wilder will be pleased with his business so far this month, with Holmes’ addition another impressive coup.
