George Long has completed a move away from Sheffield United, linking up with Sky Bet Championship rivals Hull City on a permanent deal.

The Blades have moved to their official website to confirm this afternoon that Long has completed a move across the Championship, with Hull paying an undisclosed fee for the goalkeeper’s service ahead of the new season.

Long has agreed a three-year deal with Hull, departing Bramall Lane having started his professional career as a Blade.

The 24-year-old has made 123 appearances for the Blades during his time with the club, but hasn’t featured since November 2016.

He has previously had loan spells with Oxford United and Motherwell, whilst last season, he spent the year with AFC Wimbledon.

During his year with Wimbledon in League One, Long made 49 appearances across all competitions, with 45 of those coming in the league, as he helped the Dons to 18th.

Long’s arrival at Hull bolsters Nigel Adkins’ goalkeeping option ahead of the new season, after Allan McGregor completed a move back to Rangers earlier this summer.

The Verdict

A move away from Sheffield United, at this stage of Long’s career, seems a sensible move.

Long’s opportunities with Sheffield United were looking limited heading into the new season, with Dean Henderson looking like he will be first choice.

The goalkeeper now has an opportunity to push on with Hull and earn some Championship experience.

He had a steady year with Wimbledon, where he featured regularly, which will be great for his development.
