Chris Wilder has ended speculation surrounding his Sheffield United future by agreeing a new contract at Bramall Lane, which will run until the summer of 2021.

There has been doubt surrounding Wilder’s future for some time now, with the 50-year-old seeking assurances from Sheffield United’s co-owners about the direction that the club are heading.

However, Wilder has resolved issues with Kevin McCabe and Prince Abdullah, agreeing a 12-month extension on his existing deal at Bramall Lane, which will take him through to the summer of 2021.

Wilder has had a hugely impressive first two years in charge at Bramall Lane, first of all leading the Blades back to the Championship, with his side storming to promotion and the League One title during the 2016/17 campaign.

On their return to the Championship the Blades made an excellent impact, surprising many by competing for the play-offs.

Wilder’s side even topped the table in October, but saw their play-off hopes dashed during the final third of the season by a miserable run of form.

Sheffield United eventually finished 10th in the Championship table.

Along with Wilder, four members of his backroom staff have also signed new deals at Bramall Lane - Alan Knill, Darren Ward, Matt Prestridge and Paul Mitchell.

The Verdict

There’s no doubt that the speculation surrounding Wilder’s future was worrying Sheffield United’s supporters, who will be relieved to see the impressive 50-year-old commit.

Resolving the issues Wilder had at this stage of the summer was key, as it allows the Blades to focus on a big few months ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

Following a good first year back in the Championship, this is the perfect news ahead of an exciting season.
