Confirmed: Reading secure agreement for experienced player

Reading have moved to secure the service of David Meyler, with the midfielder arriving at the Madejski Stadium as a free agent.

Meyler is ending a long association with Hull City this summer, leaving the KCOM Stadium after five-and-a-half years, having failed to agree a new contract with the Tigers.

That contract with Hull expires at the end of the month, with Reading announcing that is when the final stage of Meyler’s two-year deal will be completed.

The Royals have initially agreed a two-year deal with the 29-year-old to tie him down until 2020, but the Sky Bet Championship club have the option to extend that deal by a further year.

Meyler brings a wealth of experience to Paul Clement’s squad at the Madejski Stadium, having made almost 200 appearances for Hull during his spell with the Tigers.

The defensive midfielder won two promotions under Steve Bruce during his time with Hull, as well as playing in the Premier League, as well as the Championship.

Meyler is Clement’s second capture of the summer, with Reading already making good use of the free agent market.

Andy Yiadom has arrived at the Madejski on a four-year deal, following his departure from Barnsley.

The Verdict

Meyler, a full Republic of Ireland international, will bring so much to Reading’s squad both on and off the field.

The midfielder has a wealth of experience, with his Championship record particularly impressive.

At 29, Meyler will be one of Clement’s experienced heads, but also one that can bring a lot in midfield, as he has shown for club and country in recent years.

Some might be disappointed by Reading’s work so far in the transfer window, but on paper, Clement has secured two very good free agents.
