Reading have swooped to secure the service of John O’Shea, who will arrive at the Madejski Stadium on July 1st.

The versatile former Republic of Ireland international will link up with Paul Clement’s side as a free agent, following the expiry of his contract with Sunderland.

O’Shea, 37, has agreed a one-year deal with Reading, with the club moving to confirm his arrival last night.

The ex-Manchester United defender will bring a wealth of experience to Clement’s squad, having made over 650 career appearances at club level.

The majority of those came during a lengthy spell under Sir Alex Ferguson at Man United, where he won both the Premier League and Champions League.

Since 2011, the defender has been part of Sunderland’s squad, who have fallen through the Football League in recent years.

O’Shea made over 250 appearances for the Black Cats, including 40 last season, as Sunderland dropped into the third-tier of English football.

The ex-Ireland international has now moved on, agreeing terms with Reading ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

The defender becomes Reading’s third arrival of the summer, following Andy Yiadom and David Meyler to the Madejski Stadium, with that duo also arriving as free agents.

The Verdict

O’Shea has a wealth of experience, after an impressive career.

Whether the defender has a big role to play with Reading on the field, remains to be seen, but the 37-year-old is sure to bring a lot to Clement’s dressing room next season.

O’Shea’s experience will be vital in helping Reading recover from a difficult year in the Championship.

A fresh start, away from Sunderland, is also ideal for the player.
