Lewis Ward signed a new deal for Reading on Friday afternoon, penning a two-year extension that will keep him at the Madjeski until 2020, the club have confirmed.

The 21-year-old spent a large part of last season on loan at National League Aldershot where he was able to pick up some first-team experience.

The Reading local made 25 appearances whilst on loan at the Shots, keeping 10 clean sheets as he impressed the fans both in Aldershot and back in Reading.

Over the last few seasons, Ward has also gained first-team experience at Sutton United, Whitehawk, Margate, Hungerford and even Icelandic side Fylkir.

But now he looks set to remain at the Madjeski and provide competition for first-choice shot-stopper Vito Mannone.

Jonathan Bond also recently returned to the club after a loan spell between the sticks at Peterborough United, but it looks likely that the 25-year-old will be sold this summer.

The verdict

This is great to see from the Royals. Ward is clearly an immensley promising goalkeeper and it is refreshing to see Championship teams putting more faith in their youth players.

As a local lad Ward is someone who will immediately have the support of the Reading faithful whilst also giving his all for the team regardless.

Fans will be hoping his recent degree in sports journalism will not be needed for a while yet and will hope to see the 21-year-old get some first-team action next season.
