Sky Bet League One side Shrewsbury Town have signed Reading midfielder Dave Edwards on a two-and-a-half year deal, the club have now confirmed.

The Welsh international returns to the club that he came through the ranks with, having featured over 119 times for the Shropshire club between 2003 and 2007 before departing for Luton Town.

Having racked up over 500 career appearances, with most of them coming in the Premier League, Edwards is a very experienced and shrewd signing for the League One side, who currently sit 16th in the league standings.

The 32-year-old midfielder endured a turbulent time at Reading, making 32 appearances for the Berkshire club before seeing his time at the Madejski Stadium cut short after an 18-month stay with the Royals.

Edwards' departure comes as part of an overhaul under Jose Gomes, with the Portuguese boss looking to steer his side away from relegation by bringing in fresh, new faces in January.

The Royals currently sit 23rd in the Sky Bet Championship table, five points adrift of safety after a recent 4-1 home defeat to Swansea City.

The Verdict

This is the best move for both parties to be honest.

Edwards had fallen massively out of favour at Reading, and is likely to be on high wages having spent the majority of his career in the top flight.

This now gives Reading the chance to improve in other areas of the pitch, as they look to crawl out of the relegation zone.
