Confirmed: Rangers secure deal for impressive Championship player

Rangers have announced the signing of Allan McGregor, who has opted to not take up the option of a new contract with Hull City in the Sky Bet Championship.

Confirmation came from Hull yesterday afternoon that McGregor had rejected the opportunity to sign fresh terms at the KCOM Stadium, instead signing a two-year deal at Ibrox to be part of Steve Gerrard’s side next season.

The 36-year-old goalkeeper made 147 appearances for Hull during his five-year stay at the KCOM.

McGregor was a regular in goal for Hull over the course of the 2017/18 Championship campaign, featuring in 44 of the Tigers’ 46 league fixtures.

The Scotland international will return to Rangers, who he played for between 2002 and 2012.

During that spell at Ibrox, McGregor made over 250 appearances for Rangers during a successful spell for the club.

The goalkeeper has become Rangers’ second signing of the summer transfer window, following Scott Arfield to Ibrox, as Gerrard begins to put his squad together ahead of a debut season of management, next year.

The Verdict

This deal has been on the cards for some time, with Hull looking destined to lose McGregor to Rangers for a number of weeks now.

It’s a blow to Nigel Adkins and Hull, as the goalkeeper has been impressive over the last 12 months.

A consistent goalkeeper is key in the Championship and the loss of McGregor will hurt the Tigers.

Hull’s loss is certainly going to be Rangers’ gain over the next two seasons.
