Confirmation has come from Wigan this afternoon that Connolly is back for a second loan spell at the DW Stadium.

Previously, Connolly played as a right-back for Wigan during the 2016/17 campaign, making 18 appearances across all competitions and scoring two goals.

Last season, he spent the year on-loan in the Championship with Ipswich Town, making 34 league appearances for the Tractor Boys and scoring four goals.

Having returned to Everton during the summer and agreed a new three-year contract with his parent-club, Connolly is back at Wigan, linking up with Paul Cook’s side for the remainder of the Championship season.

The Latics are looking to establish themselves back in the second-tier following promotion last season, with Cook’s side getting off to the perfect start last weekend against Sheffield Wednesday.

Wigan won 3-2 last weekend against the Owls, and will have eyes on adding to that three points this Saturday, when Cook takes his side to Villa Park to taken on last season’s beaten play-off finalists, Aston Villa.

The Verdict

Connolly is a talent, who last season in the Championship, looked very good.

His last spell at Wigan was reasonable, and during his time with Ipswich, Connolly looked good in midfield.

Bringing in a young player like this on-loan should help improve the balance in Cook’s squad.
