League One leaders Portsmouth have completed the signing of attacking midfielder Andy Cannon from Rochdale.

The 22-year-old will be joining the south coast club on a two-and-a-half year deal, with the club having an option to extend that by a further 12 months.

Pompey confirmed the news on their website this evening, with Cannon now going to link up with his new teammates as he looks to help their promotion push.

Speaking to the official site, boss Kenny Jackett outlined exactly what he expects his latest recruit to bring to the team: "I see Andy as an attacking midfielder and feel he will be a good addition to our squad. I’m looking forward to working with him."

With Portsmouth in FA Cup and Checkatrade Trophy action in their next two games, and Cannon cup-tied, he will have to wait for his debut.

That means his first outing in a Pompey shirt is likely to be when they face Blackpool at Fratton Park on 12 January.

Cannon has already played against his new teammates twice this season, with the leaders victorious in both the league and FA Cup.

The Verdict

This is a decent signing from Portsmouth and at 22-years-old, he has the potential to improve and become a key player in the years to come.

Jackett will be delighted to have acted so quickly and the recruitment team deserve credit for that.

Now, it's down to Cannon to meet his new players and he will be hoping to make a big impression in what is a good team.
