Key Millwall man Shaun Williams has signed a one-year contract extension that will keep him at the New Den until 2020.

The 31-year-old has been an important figure for Neil Harris' side since joining in 2014 from MK Dons and was crucial in their promotion back to the Championship two years ago.

He also impressed in the second-tier last season, as the Lions made a late push for the play-offs.

Williams has carried that into this season and was rewarded with a call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad earlier this month and he even scored against Wales.

Now, the London club confirmed on their website that he has committed his future to the club, with Williams explaining that it was an easy decision:

"I'm really pleased to extend my time at Millwall. I'm very settled at the club, am enjoying my football, and my family feel at home in the area, so all in all, it was a complete no-brainer."

Harris also commented, feeling the new deal was fully deserved:

"He has been a focal point in our team over the last three years and a leader on and off the pitch. His new contract is warranted by performances over the last 12 months. I look forward to working with him in the short and long-term future."

The Verdict

This is good news for Millwall and the player, who merits the new deal for his performances over recent years.

As the manager explains, he is a key figure for the side, both on and off the pitch and will be vital if they are to push up the table this season.

Now it's sorted it should settle Williams, who will be relieved he can just focus on his football now.
