Middlesbrough have a number of bright young stars in their ranks, and the club have moved to further bolster their future options, by tying youngster Lewis Wing to a new deal.

The 22-year-old joined in the summer from non-league side Shildon AFC, and has done enough in the reserve set-up at The Riverside to be rewarded with a new contract.

Shildon made his first team debut in the Carabao Cup tie with Scunthorpe United, after replacing Grant Leadbitter in the second half.

Wing did enough in that cameo to earn himself a starting berth in the next round, with the midfielder putting in a fine performance in Boro’s comfortable win at Aston Villa.

“I’m delighted to sign a contract extension with Boro,” revealed the midfielder.

“It’s been fantastic for me being involved with the first team, and I’m really grateful to get the opportunity.

“Now I’m just focusing on continuing to improve because it’s been a great year for me so far.”

The Verdict

Picking up non-league gems has become something of a Football League trend in recent years, and it appears Boro have found a diamond in the rough of their own in Wing.

The player has not looked out of place in the first team squad, and the next step for the player is to break into league match sides.

The season is long and arduous, and Wing will certainly get his chance at some stage.

Wing will know he has to take any opportunity that comes his way, and will be spurred by the club’s faith in offering him a new deal.
