Lincoln City have completed the signing of Boreham Wood goalkeeper Grant Smith on a two-year deal, confirmed the Imps' official website.

The 24-year-old was named in the National League's team of the season starting every game for the Wood last season as they lost out to Tranmere Rovers in the play-off final.

Imps manager Danny Cowley says the signing will provide a real fight for the number one jersey.

"He has a fantastic attitude and has a real desire to improve and get better and he’s going to make it a really good fight for the number one spot," Cowley told the club's website

Main goalkeeping responsibility was split between Josh Vickers and Ryan Allsop at Lincoln last season but the latter has recently returned parent club Bournemouth.

New man Smith had started over 100 straight games for Boreham Wood before his move to Sincil Bank.

He has worked his way up through the non-league ranks having been released by Brighton and Hove Albion, playing for Hayes and Yeading before signing for Crystal Palace only to be sent out to Bognor Regis on loan for the 2015/16 season.

Boreham Wood signed the keeper permanently at the start of the following campaign.

The verdict

This looks to be a very good signing for Danny Cowley's team.

Having been dumped comfortably out of the play-offs by Exeter City, Imps fans would have been keen to not see their team rest on their laurels.

Smith is City's fourth signing and the fourth who will be in and around the first team, showing their intent to go one better than last season and win promotion.

Having a solid goalkeeper spreads confidence throughout the entire team and Smith has the potential to do just that.
