Leeds United last night confirmed the arrival of Adam Forshaw via their official website, having agreed a £4.5m fee with Middlesbrough for the midfielder’s signature.

Forshaw becomes Leeds’ latest arrival of the January transfer window, joining Laurens De Bock in Thomas Christiansen’s first-team squad, along with the number of additions the Whites have made to their youth team.

The 26-year-old had a number of options this month, but has opted for a move to West Yorkshire, agreeing a four-and-a-half year deal at Elland Road and committing to the Whites until at least the summer of 2022.

The midfielder had been with Middlesbrough for three years, making over 100 appearances on Teesside and playing a part in the club’s promotion campaign in the 2015/16 season.

However, despite featuring regularly that year and last season in the Premier League, Forshaw struggled for opportunities on Boro’s return to the second-tier, with Garry Monk and Tony Pulis opting for other partnerships in central midfield.

Forshaw was limited to just five Championship starts during the first-half of the season, but could be set for his sixth this weekend, when Leeds entertain Millwall at Elland Road.

The Whites have confirmed that their new midfielder, who will be wearing the number four shirt, will go straight into Christiansen’s squad for Saturday, as the club looks to end a four-match winless run across all competitions.

The Verdict

This is potentially a very shrewd deal by Leeds, with Forshaw able to bring some of the necessary Championship experience that had been missing at Elland Road during the first-half of the season.

Forshaw has shown over his career that he is more than capable of playing at Championship level, and if Leeds can get the best out of the 26-year-old, he will ultimately improve Christiansen’s hand.

Injuries and suspensions mean that Forshaw is likely to face a baptism of fire against Millwall this weekend, but Christiansen will be confident his experienced new head can deal with a tough clash.
