Huddersfield Town’s Martin Cranie has signed a contract extension with the club, confirms the club’s official website.

The defender’s deal now runs until the end of the 2018 season, with his current deal set to run out at the end of this campaign in west Yorkshire.

Operating at right-back, he joined the Terriers in 2015 and has since enjoyed a successful 18-months with the club, making 50 appearances.

However, chances have been limited for the 30-year-old this season, due to the impressive form of Tommy Smith, limiting him to just six starts across all competitions.

Speaking about the defender’s new deal, head coach David Wagner told the club’s website: “I am delighted that we have agreed a deal to keep Martin at the Club, as he is a very important player in our squad.

“He has been excellent in the games he has played this season and last, making him a real competitor for the right back position alongside Tommy Smith. It is perfect for me to have two high quality players who can both play. His ability to play different positions is valuable too.”

Cranie was an unused substitute in Sunday’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Leeds United, where goals from Izzy Brown and Michael Hefele moved Town above their Yorkshire rivals in the Sky Bet Championship table.

The victory saw Wagner’s side move to fourth in the Championship table, now just six points behind the automatic promotion places.

Huddersfield face Queens Park Rangers this weekend where they will be looking for their fourth straight league victory.
