Derby County’s official website have confirmed that the club have agreed new terms with Scott Carson, with the goalkeeper committing to the Rams until the summer of 2020.

Carson has been with Derby since 2015, when he arrived at the Pride Park Stadium from Wigan Athletic, and since then, the goalkeeper has established himself as a first-team regular under various managerial regimes.

The 32-year-old has made 177 appearances for the Rams across all competitions, including 28 across the current campaign, as Gary Rowett’s side go in search of promotion back to the Premier League.

Carson has featured in every Championship fixture so far this season, keeping 13 clean sheets, with Derby moving to reward the experienced stopper with a new deal.

The goalkeeper’s form over the course of the season has handed Derby the second best defensive record in the Championship, with Rowett’s side conceding just 23 goals, which is only bettered by the division’s runaway leaders, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Derby currently sit second to Wolves in the table, with Rowett’s side on a strong run of form, and undefeated in the Championship since late November.

The Rams’ strong run of form has seen them open up a two-point gap to Cardiff City in third, which they will be looking to extend when Rowett’s side entertain Bristol City this evening.

The Verdict

Carson’s form over the course of his Derby career, and particularly this season, has been impressive, with the 32-year-old proving to be one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the Championship.

Rowett’s side are flying right now in the Championship, and boasting one of the best defences in the league can’t be overlooked, with Carson a key commander in that unit.

This is a real boost for the Rams heading into a testing period of fixtures.
