Bristol City have today confirmed the signing of Chelsea centre-back Tomas Kalas on a season-long loan, announced the club's official website

The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at Fulham and becomes Lee Johnson's ninth signing of the summer and the second centre-back to join the club after Adam Webster's arrival.

He made 33 appearances for Slavisa Jokanovic's side last season and appeared in two of the games in their successful play-off campaign as well as making 36 appearances for the same club the season before.

It was not his first promotion campaign either having been a part of the Middlesbrough squad that finished second in the Championship in the 2015/16 season, making 26 appearances.

He has also made 12 appearances for the Czech Republic's national side and scored twice for his country.

The centre-back joined the Chelsea back in 2010 but has never managed regular game time, spending seven seasons out on loan since moving to Stamford Bridge.

He will go straight into the Robins' squad to face Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.

The verdict

This is a very, very good signing for Lee Johnson's side.

Kalas has proven before that he is a top Championship centre-back and this serves as a real statement of the club's intent to be battling at the top end of the table.

Aden Flint is quickly becoming a distant memory.
