Charlton Athletic have appointed Lee Bowyer as the club’s permanent manager.

The League One side confirmed the news which sees the former caretaker boss become the leading man at the Valley on a permanent basis.

The former Addicks player took caretaker charge in March following the sacking of Karl Robinson and helped the League One side make the play-off semi-finals.

Despite losing over two legs to Shrewsbury Town, Bowyer continued in his temporary role throughout the summer and into the start of this season.

After an indifferent set of results to start the campaign, winning, losing and drawing two each of their six matches, the club sits 10th in the division, looking to push on.

Charlton’s fixtures pause due to international call-ups but Bowyer's first official game as first-team manager will be next weekend when they host Wycombe Wanderers.

On his appointment, Bowyer told the club’s official website: “I’m delighted and very proud to be appointed Manager.

“I said when I first took charge that it was a fairytale to be back working at Charlton, the club I started playing at. I love the club and will give everything to get promotion.”

The Verdict

Finally, the club has done something decent after months, and years of poor decisions.

Lee Bowyer as Charlton manager was the elephant in the room, being in caretaker charge but doing so for six months, he was basically the permanent manager anyway.

Despite all the doom and gloom at the club, it is a good appointment - he knows the club, and understands it and could do well if he is given time to learn, too.

A managerial novice, Bowyer will learn on the job and look to steer the Addicks back to the Championship this term after coming so close last time out.

There is never a dull moment at The Valley, and the ride is set to continue with Bowyer at the helm full-time.
