Brentford have today confirmed the signing of Stade de Reims centre-back Julian Jeanvier on a four-year deal, as announced by the club's official website

The 26-year-old moves for an undisclosed fee and the Bees have the option to extend the four-year deal by a further 12 months.

Jeanvier was an integral member of the Reims squad that took home the Ligue 2 title last season, making 33 appearances on their way to the title.

He is also a threat in the opposition area, scoring twice in the league and assisting two more.

The 6ft centre-back becomes the latest addition to Dean Smith's side, following the likes of Ellery Balcombe, Ezri Konsa and Said Benrahma through the door.

Coming through the academy at AS Nancy, Jeanvier made the move to Lille in 2013 and spent time on-loan in Belgium with Mouscron and Red Star FC, before moving to Reims on a free transfer in the summer of 2016.

The verdict

A centre-back was definitely needed after the departure of John Egan to Sheffield United earlier in the window.

It seems a lot of pressure to put on the new signing, however, to get him to replace the former captain, who was such an important part of the team.

Bees fans will be hoping this is not the only new centre-back they will be bringing, because at the moment it is a risk.
