Blackburn Rovers have today confirmed the signing of Newcastle United striker Adam Armstrong for an undisclosed fee, announced the club's official website.
The 21-year-old signs on a four-year deal and becomes Tony Mowbray's fourth signing of the summer after the arrival of Kasey Palmer, Joe Rothwell and Jacob Davenport at Ewood Park.
Armstrong spent the second half of last season on loan with Rovers scoring nine goals in 21 appearances under Mowbray and has now made his switch permanent.
The striker has enjoyed a few fruitful loan spells away from St James's Park over the last few years.
His first came with Coventry City in the 2015/16 season in League One where he scored 20 goals in his first season of first-team football.
Next season saw him step up to the Championship with Barnsley where he scored six goals and assisted four more in 36 appearances.
He spent the first half of last season on loan with Bolton Wanderers but failed to make an impact under Phil Parkinson and was subsequently moved to Blackburn in January.
The verdict
This is a brilliant signing for Blackburn.
It is easy to forget that Armstrong is still only 21 after bursting onto the scene as an 18-year-old at Coventry City so I would not read much into his previous struggles in the Championship.
He clearly enjoyed working under Tony Mowbray and I would expect him to thrive at Ewood Park this season, especially with the service he will get from the likes of Bradley Dack.
