Blackburn Rovers have emerged as surprise play-off contenders this season and the hard work put in by manager Tony Mowbray often goes unnoticed - until now.

It was announced that Mowbray had signed a contract extension with the Lancashire based club until 2022, and Rovers fans will be hoping he can lead them further up the table after an impressive start to this season.

Blackburn confirmed the new deal for Mowbray on their website on Friday evening.

In an interview with the club after extending his stay at Ewood Park, Mowbray stated he is keen to build on some positive recent seasons for the club, which has seen them rise up the Championship table:

"I’m humbled, first and foremost, to have been offered the opportunity to sign a new contract at such an amazing football club.

"I’ve enjoyed the journey so far, but there is still a long way to go. In my mind, it is always about trying to build, improve and get better."

The Rovers boss is confident that he is the man to lead Blackburn to a long-awaited return to the Premier League, providing he is given the funds to build the squad he needs to challenge for promotion:

"I feel as if we can prove to the Owners that we can get them back on the right road towards the Premier League. I'm sure they will invest in this team and support the club back to where we belong."

Tomorrow, Mowbray's men host a Sheffield Wednesday side that will be looking to build on a victory, whilst Blackburn will be looking to put an end to their recent slump, which has seen Rovers beaten twice in successive weeks.

The Verdict

This is quite possibly the best news of the season so far for Blackburn fans.

Mowbray may not have been an inspiring appointment in the first-place, but he has quietly gone about his business and it's evidently working as he has led Blackburn into play-off contention this season.

If the owners can back him with funds in January then I can see no reason as to why Rovers can sneak into the play-off positions by the end of this season.
