Blackburn Rovers have signed Oxford United midfielder Joe Rothwell on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The former Manchester United youngster is the first signing of the summer for Tony Mowbray as he looks to add to his squad ahead of their Championship return.

Rothwell was an important player for Oxford last season, playing 41 times and scoring six goals. As well as that, he impressed with his all-action displays and energy.

Prior to joining the The U's, he had turned down a deal with United and spent spells in the lower leagues with Blackpool and Barnsley.

Whilst he played for the Seasiders in the second-tier this will be his first full season at this level.

The 23-year old will link up with his new teammates as they prepare to begin pre-season next week with a week-long trip to Austria, whilst Rovers' first game is against Hibs on July 8.

Mowbray will hope this is the first of many additions as he looks to establish the side in the Championship.

The Verdict

This is a very good signing for Blackburn and he fits the profile for the sort of players they should be going for.

They don't have the biggest budget by any means in the Championship so going for young, hungry players is the way to go and Rothwell will be desperate to prove himself.

Bringing him in this early also provides him with time to settle ahead of the new campaign.
