Paul Robinson will remain at Birmingham City following his retirement from playing, with the ex-defender switching to the coaching staff at St Andrew’s.

Confirmation has come from the club this afternoon that Robinson will take over as the Assistant Senior Professional Development Coach, as he continues to learn the ropes of coaching.

Robinson’s new role will see him work alongside Richard Beale bringing through the Club’s under-23s Development Squad, after he was successful in a full interview process.

The 39-year-old has spent time working on his UEFA coaching badges in recent years, as well as helping to coach Birmingham’s youth teams over the course of the last year and assisting Lee Carsley during his caretaker spell with the first-team.

The end of the 2017/18 campaign marked the end of a 22-year playing career for Robinson, who made over 750 career appearances during spells with Watford, West Brom, Bolton, Leeds and finally, Birmingham.

Robinson has been with the Blues since September 2012, making 175 appearances for the club.

The last of those appearances came on the final day of the season, with Garry Monk introducing Robinson as a 90th minute substitute in the 3-1 victory over Fulham, which guaranteed the club’s Championship status for next season.

The Verdict

Robinson has been a great servant to Birmingham in recent years, giving the last years of his playing career to the Blues.

The 39-year-old is clearly keen to get into coaching and offer his experience to the youngsters at St Andrew’s, which can only be seen as a positive for the Blues.

Someone who is fresh out of the playing squad will be perfect, helping the youngsters make the transition into first-team football at Birmingham.
