Birmingham City have secured the future of Steve Seddon, with the defender putting pen-to-paper on a short-term deal at St Andrew’s.

The Blues’ official website have confirmed that the 20-year-old has agreed a one-year deal until the summer of 2019, with Birmingham having the option to extend that contract by a further 12 months, if they wish.

Seddon, who arrived at Birmingham following his release from Reading, is a promising left-back, but can also feature as a centre-back.

He is yet to feature for Birmingham’s first-team, but enters the summer on the back of a promising 2017/18 campaign that saw him make 30 appearances for the under-23s and score three goals.

Seddon has been involved in Birmingham’s senior squads before, featuring as an unused substitute in the 3-0 victory over Hull City back in March.

The 20-year-old’s next task will be breaking into Garry Monk’s first-team in the next 12 months.

Monk is preparing Birmingham for another year in the Sky Bet Championship, having successfully guided the Blues to safety during the closing weeks of the 2017/18 season.

The Verdict

Seddon is clearly a promising part of Birmingham’s under-23s, with the club keen to keep him on ahead of next season.

The next 12 months are important for the 20-year-old, who needs to prove to the Blues that he is progressing enough to earn a further 12-month extension.

Monk will hope to see the left-back pushing on into the first-team in either the Carabao Cup or FA Cup.
