Birmingham City’s official website have confirmed that the contract of David Cotterill has been cancelled by mutual consent, with the midfielder now free to join another club.

Cotterill’s contract with the Blues was due to run until the summer of 2018, but Birmingham have agreed to cancel the 30-year-old’s deal, wishing him well and allowing him to explore different options heading into the January transfer window.

The winger has been with Birmingham since the summer of 2014, and has made over 100 appearances for the Blues, but last season spent the second-half of the campaign on-loan with Bristol City, as his opportunities at St Andrew’s began to look limited.

So far this season Cotterill has once again found chances limited, and has not featured since November’s 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough, with the 30-year-old not even involved in the matchday squad for Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers.

Cotterill doesn’t fit in Steve Cotterill’s long-term plans at Birmingham, with the club allowing the player to leave St Andrew’s six-months earlier than was anticipated, allowing the 30-year-old an early chance to secure a new employer.

Cotterill leaves Birmingham rooted to the foot of the Championship table heading into the festive period.

The Verdict

Cotterill has found opportunities limited in recent months, and this news ahead of the January transfer window is hardly a surprise, with the midfielder’s early departure opening up room in Birmingham’s squad for reinforcements.

The 30-year-old has been a good servant at Birmingham, but a number of managerial changes in recent years has hindered Cotterill’s chance of establishing himself in the starting XI.

A sideways move in the Championship could well be on the cards for the player.
