Birmingham City have confirmed this morning that Riley McGree has returned to Charlotte FC following the expiration of his loan with the Sky Bet Championship side.

McGree has had two spells on loan at Birmingham, stretching across the last two Championship seasons.

In total, the 23-year-old has made 30 appearances for Blues and scored three goals. His performances this season under Lee Bowyer have been particularly impressive - in 13 outings in the Championship, he’s scored two goals and registered two assists.

McGree scored in wins over Swansea City and Bristol City earlier in the season, with his goal against the Swans a late winner - there was also a pair of assists in November’s 2-2 draw with Cardiff City.

However, as was provisionally agreed, Birmingham have now confirmed that McGree has returned to Charlotte FC, his MLS club.

McGree departs with Birmingham sitting 17th in the Championship table after 23 fixtures.

Bowyer now has to come up with a solution to McGree’s exit, having called on his service in a number of different midfield roles.

Traditionally more attacking, McGree has played a more conservative role on occasions.

The Verdict

This is a blow that Birmingham knew was coming, so despite the disappointment of losing McGree, you’d hope Bowyer and the board will have a plan in place with January just around the corner.

The 23-year-old had been a useful player for Birmingham in the early part of the season, offering flexibility in the midfield.

Bowyer needs to find a suitable replacement to give Birmingham the best possible chance of playing through the lines. McGree offered something different, which will need replacing.
