Barnsley have today confirmed the signing of Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Jordan Smith on a week-long emergency loan deal, report the club's official website.

With Adam Davies away on international duty with Wales and Jack Walton out with an injury the Tykes were in dire need of a senior shot-stopper for their clash with Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

Smith has made 48 appearances for the Forest first team during his time at the club but is yet to get any league minutes under Aitor Karanka this season.

He has made just one appearance in the current campaign in a League Cup win against Bury, although he was sent off in the 33rd minute of the match.

Barnsley currently sit fourth in the League One table following their relegation last season, with just Peterborough United, Sunderland and Portsmouth above them.

A win on Saturday against Stanley could close the gap on the top two to just one point but a defeat would bring their opponents level with them.

The verdict

This is probably as good an option as they could have hoped for in the circumstances.

Smith has not exactly shone for Barnsley so far this season but should be more than capable of filling in for the absent 'keepers against Accrington.
