Barnsley fans can breath a sigh of relief after one of their key midfielders signed a new deal at Oakwell.

Alex Mowatt has been a crucial member of Daniel Stendel's squad this season as they target an immediate return to the Championship following relegation last year.

It was announced on Barnsley's official Twitter page that the midfielder has signed a new deal with the club that will run until 2020, with Barnsley having the option to extend that deal by a further year.

The creative midfielder has been ever-present in their promotion push this season and has started all 17 league games for the League One contenders.

He arrived at Oakwell in January 2017 from Leeds but was unable to save the Tykes from relegation to the third tier of English football.

In a recent interview with Barnsley's official website, Mowatt's focus was on gaining promotion back to the Championship this season:

"It's all about staying focused and getting the club back in the Championship, that's the aim of everyone at the club."

Mowatt and his Barnsley teammates will be hoping to continue their impressive start to the season when they host Doncaster Rovers at the weekend in what will be an entertaining derby.

The Verdict

The news of Mowatt's new deal will be a huge boost to Barnsley, with the midfielder really showing his class this season.

His creativity in the midfield is crucial to the success of the team this season and he will be hoping to kick on for the remainder of the year.

He has been given a fresh start under new management and certainly seems to be making the most of it, with his new deal fully deserved.
