Confirmed: Aston Villa swoop to secure surprise deal

Alan Hutton has signed a one-year contract extension with Aston Villa, keeping him at Villa Park until the summer of 2019.

The defender’s contract was set to expire at the end of this month, but Villa have moved to confirm that the Scottish full-back would be giving another year of service to the club, after agreeing fresh terms.

Hutton has committed himself to Villa for the 2018/19 campaign, handing the club a huge boost after a difficult start to the summer.

The 33-year-old has made 168 appearances for Villa during his time at Villa Park, and was influential last season under Steve Bruce, as Villa challenged for promotion in the Sky Bet Championship.

Hutton featured on 33 occasions last season, with his versatility covering both right-back and left-back.

Alongside Ahmed Elmohamady, James Chester and John Terry, Hutton helped to provide one of the Championship’s most consistent defensive units, as Villa went all the way to the play-off final.

A 1-0 defeat to Fulham denied Villa promotion, with the club facing a difficult start to the summer as they prepare for a third consecutive year in the Championship.

Hutton has snubbed interest from Nottingham Forest to commit to Villa for another year.

The Verdict

It has been a tough start to the summer for Villa, but this is a huge boost.

Hutton was superb last season under Bruce, and for him to commit for another year is massive for the club.

It seemed like Hutton was destined for Forest, making Villa’s announcement a surprise to many.
