Jed Steer has left Aston Villa, with the goalkeeper linking up with Charlton Athletic on a season-long loan.

An announcement has come from Aston Villa this afternoon, confirming that Steer will spend the year in League One with Lee Bowyer’s Charlton.

Steer has been at Villa Park 2013, but the goalkeeper has only managed nine first-team appearances for the club.

The 25-year-old has spent time out on-loan with the likes of Doncaster Rovers, Yeovil Town and Huddersfield Town over the years, making over 50 appearances in that time.

Last year, Steer spent time on the sidelines with a shoulder injury, but made his first competitive start for a lengthy period on Monday, featuring in Villa’s 3-1 victory over Hull City.

However, Orjan Nyland has been added to Steve Bruce’s squad at a late stage of the transfer window, with it widely expected that the Norwegian goalkeeper will come straight into the side as Villa’s first choice this weekend against Wigan Athletic.

That has opened the door for Steer to depart, with the goalkeeper linking up with Charlton in League One and adding to Bowyer’s goalkeeping options for the 2018/19 season.

The Verdict

Steer has been unlucky during his spell at Villa Park, but with Nyland arriving, this is probably best for the goalkeeper.

At 25, he needs to be playing regular football, which just wasn’t going to come at Villa Park.

Villa will hope that Bowyer gives the goalkeeper a chance at Charlton.
