In a statement on the Millwall website, the club declared that the 24-year-old has put pen to paper on a new deal with the Lions.

O’Brien stated: “I've been here for so many years now and I'm happy to dedicate another two or three to this good club.

"I've been with the gaffer throughout my whole time here. Playing with him, my manager in the Under 21s alongside Scott Fitzgerald and he has given me the chance in the last couple of years since he got the job.

"I hope to say I've repaid him in some ways and I've got another long-term deal here, so I'm delighted."

O’Brien featured 26 times in all competitions last season for Millwall, finding the net on four occasions.

Millwall manager Neil Harris stated: “Naturally I'm very happy that Aiden has committed his long-term future to Millwall. He is at a wonderful age in footballing terms and his development over the past few years has gone hand-in-hand with the club's progress as a whole.

"Aiden offers us something completely different in the way that he plays and is a genuine goal threat from different areas on the pitch.”

O'Brien has scored 36 goals in 163 appearances since making his Lions debut in 2011, and will be hoping to add to that tally in the coming seasons.

The Verdict

Aiden O’Brien signing a new long-term contract is the perfect way to Millwall to start their new Championship campaign.

Despite not making as many appearances last season as some may have expected, the striker is bound to feature for Harris’ side this season, and will be hoping they can improve on last season’s eighth place finish.

The Lions have no officially announced the length of the contract, but O’Brien will certainly be at The Den for the foreseeable future.
