Aston Villa were named as one of the clubs who were facing a potential points deduction over a breach of FFP regulations according to The Daily Mail.

After Birmingham City's nine-point deduction earlier this week, there are sure to be plenty of nervous faces around Villa Park at this moment in time.

Although they won't face any action this season, it's not the headlines that they want at such a crucial stage of the campaign.

Villa have been hugely impressive in recent weeks, with Dean Smith's side moving into the top six at the perfect time with just eight games remaining.

They look like the team to beat and there seems to be little stopping the Villans as they look to make a return to the Premier League.

But a potential points deduction is going to be concerning reading for the Villa Park faithful, and with good reason as well.

If they were to be hit with the harshest possible punishment, then it could be season-defining, especially if they are to start next season chasing down other sides from the opening day.

They can't afford to be making up the ground from minute one.

Even though key figures at the club are confident they will comply with the rules, it's hard to see how they will given the hefty losses they recently announced.

Unless of course they sold Jack Grealish, but that will be extremely problematic.

Nevertheless, promotion would solve any of these problems and that's the target right now, however another season in the Championship could mean a nervy time for Aston Villa.
