Martin Grainger made over 220 league appearances for Birmingham City between 1996 and 2005.

The defender, now aged 47, spent 15 years as a professional footballer - nine of those with Birmingham. He was a firm favourite at St Andrew's and before retiring in 2005, he was given his own testimonial match.

But on Friday, Grainger revealed that David Gold and David Sullivan - then co-chairmen of Birmingham City, and now West Ham United - charged him £6,800 for the use of the pitch during his own testimonial.

The revelation prompted a stern response from Birmingham fans. Gold and Sullivan became chairmen of the club in 1993 - they spent 13 years at the helm before investing in West Ham, and have since become unpopular there too.

Grainger's claim sparked a huge response from Birmingham City fans on Twitter, and very few of them were surprised to hear about Gold and Sullivan's treatment of the former player.
