‘Completely and utterly pointless’ – Impressive Sunderland win came far too late for these fans last season

The 2017/18 season was far from a great one for Sunderland, in fact it will probably go down as the worst campaign in the club’s history.

Having suffered one embarrassing relegation from the Premier League the season before, hopes were high that they would at the very least, be challenging for promotion straight away.

Simon Grayson initially took up the reins but after a slow opening month, it quickly became apparent that all was not well at the club.

By Christmas they were wedged firmly in the relegation zone, with new boss Chris Coleman needing something close to miracle to see them out of it.

That miracle never came, and after a 2-1 defeat at home to Burton Albion in April, their relegation to the third tier was confirmed.

I am sure many fans would have happily forfeited the final two matches of the season just to end their pain, but they still had to face Champions Wolves on the final day of the campaign.

On paper, this would only go one way, with an emphatic win for the runaway league winners surely on the cards.

But the Black Cats finally decided to turn up, albeit far too late in the season, with goals from Ovie Ojaria, Ashley Fletcher and Paddy McNair handing the home side a shock 3-0 win.

It did little to ease the pain of relegation, however, and the fans remained largely unhappy:
