Aston Villa could be handed a significant injury boost tonight with the news that captain James Chester could return to the side following injury.

The 30-year-old missed the goalless draw with Reading last weekend and is back training this week after spending time recuperating from a problematic knee problem, according to Aston Villa’s official website.

Dean Smith will leave it as late as possible to get a clear assessment on the defender who, if unable to feature, will have another watching break while Tyrone Mings and Tommy Elphick deputise in defence.

Villa need a win against the Blades to keep their play-off charge on course and move within a point of the top-six and in a position to maintain a push for the elusive post-season places.

With that said, we asked our team of FLW writers if they thought it would be a boost for Aston Villa to have their captain back fit and available for this evening’s fixtures with Sheffield United.

Here’s what they had to say on the subject.

Gary Hutchinson

“It’s a boost, but with Elphick and Mings it’s not essential.

“Chester is a strong defender though, someone with leadership qualities.

“Every side would be wanting him back if they had him.

“It’s certainly going to be helpful.”

Louie Chandler

“Definitely.

“While Smith made some important defensive additions Chester remains their best option.

“Having your best players is always a big boost whether or not others have performed well at their place.”

Jacob Potter

“This has come at the perfect time.

“Villa have been missing his experience and leadership in recent games, and his return is a huge boost for Dean Smith's side.

“His inclusion could tilt the game in Villa's favour tonight I feel.”
