Former Sunderland striker Jermaine Defoe was spotted at the Stadium of Light last night, watching on as his former side squeezed out a 1-1 draw with Nigel Clough's Burton Albion.

The 36-year-old is currently plying his trade with Rangers, on loan from Premier League side Bournemouth. He's bagged six goals in six starts in the SPFL, but had a similarly prolific time with Sunderland between 2015 and 2017.

In 93 matches for the club he bagged 37 goals, with 34 coming in 82 starts in the Premier League. His last goal at the Stadium of Light came over two years ago, in January 2017 during a 3-1 defeat by Stoke City.

He's still widely regarded as a hero on Wearside, despite playing in the Sunderland side that was relegated in 2016/17. He's since carved a good career out north of the border, joining the Ibrox side in January and performing well.

If the reaction from Sunderland fans on Twitter is anything to go by, despite his advancing years they'd be delighted to see him back in red and white next season.

Some would even have liked him to have brought his boots last night.
