Chris Coleman has backed his Sunderland side to spring a surprise at Millwall this weekend, but admitted that his side must show personality at the Den.

Speaking to Sunderland’s official Twitter account (@SunderlandAFC), Coleman has been previewing tomorrow’s trip to the capital, stressing that his side are more than capable of a result but they must show personality.

The Stadium of Light boss said:

Millwall have been exceptional at the Den this season, and entertain Sunderland tomorrow as one of the Sky Bet Championship’s form sides, having recorded three consecutive victories.

Neil Harris’ side have picked up victories over Birmingham City, Sheffield Wednesday and Burton Albion in their last three fixtures, which has catapulted them into the top-half of the Championship table ahead of the final 12 fixtures of the season.

Whilst Millwall are firmly looking up the Championship table, Sunderland are in all kinds of trouble in the relegation fight, with Coleman’s side footing the table heading into this weekend.

The Black Cats have 27 points and are five points adrift of safety heading into the final 12 fixtures of the season, having failed to pick up three points since January’s 1-0 victory over Hull City.

The Verdict

Tomorrow’s clash with Millwall will be tough for Sunderland, who have shown very little fighting spirit in recent weeks.

The Den is one of the toughest grounds to visit in the Championship, which is why Coleman is talking about personality ahead of Sunderland’s trip to Millwall.

If the Black Cats can pick up three points on the road this weekend, it will be up there with the best of results this season.
