Chris Coleman is willing to renegotiate his contract with Sunderland in order to stay at the Stadium of Light following relegation from the Sky Bet Championship.

Sunderland’s relegation was confirmed last weekend following a 2-1 defeat to Burton Albion, with it unclear whether Coleman will be the man to lead the Black Cats in League One, despite being contracted to the club.

The ex-Welsh international boss admitted that it wasn’t the prospect of taking a pay cut that would force him out of Sunderland, with Coleman keen to seek assurances over the plans for the team.

He told the Chronicle Live: “There’s nothing (about a pay cut) in my contract but I’ll tell you now, I have absolutely no problem with having a different contract.

“That’s not the problem for me, the problem is what the plan is for the team, the signings.

“I’d do it (renegotiate) if someone wanted to look at the contract.”

Last weekend’s disappointing late defeat to Burton was Sunderland’s 22nd loss of the season, with Coleman’s side whimpering toward League One and currently sitting at the foot of the Championship table.

The Black Cats have managed to pick up just six victories over the course of the season, with the final two fixtures of the season not offering much hope of adding to that.

Coleman takes his side to Craven Cottage this evening to take on promotion-chasing Fulham, before Wolves, who will collect the Championship trophy this weekend, visit the Stadium of Light on the final day of the season.

The Verdict

It hasn’t been a good season for Sunderland or Coleman.

Many expected Coleman to address many of the issues at Sunderland, but that job has proved to be too difficult.

However, next season presents itself as an opportunity to rebuild and Coleman appears up for the challenge of helping Sunderland back up to the Championship.

His willingness to take a pay cut is great to see and given the right reassurances ahead of summer, Coleman could be the man to finally get Sunderland back on the rise.
