Chris Coleman got his first win in charge of Sunderland with a 2-0 away win over Burton Albion thanks to late goals from James Vaughan and George Honeyman.

The former Wales manager's maiden victory lifted the Black Cats off the bottom of the Championship table and he told the club's official website just how happy he was with the crucial win.

He said: "It's been a long week. It's given us something to work on, something to build on. I know there's been so much disappointment, none moreso than the players.

"They're waiting for something to happen, something to hang onto. As soon as they've got something to work to I think that rubs off on the supporters and it did today.

"The support we had here today was brilliant. It's a little first step and there are many more steps we need to take. But it's a good start. We deserved the three points.

"The first clean sheet is mainly down to the players. We have worked mainly offensively, we haven't worked much defensively cos we need to try and score more goals if we're going to win games.

"But to score two goals and get a clean sheet, that's absolutely fantastic. Burton were gambling and sending bodies forwards but we stayed focused.

"Don't get carried away with a win. The lads deserve it, everyone deserves it but we need to focus on Reading next week now."

The Verdict:

You might have expected Coleman to be ecstatic but he is experienced enough to know that his side have to stay focused and keep working if they are to move up the table.

He will be delighted to have inspired the Black Cats off the foot of the table but wanting to build on that and get out of the relegation zone.
