League One strugglers Colchester United have signed Birmingham defender Will Packwood on loan until January, the club have confirmed.
Packwood, 21, is likely to provide short term cover for U’s captain Magnus Okugonghae who is likely to be out for the rest of the season after rupturing an achilles on Saturday as Colchester lost 1-0 to Coventry.
The young American came through the youth ranks with the Blues after signing in 2007 aged just 14 years old and has represented the United States at every youth level.
However, his opportunities around the Birmingham first team have been limited and he has only made 17 first team appearances since being promoted to the first team back in 2011.
Packwood was sent out on loan to Bristol Rovers last season, making eight League Two appearances. In that time he improved their form as they only lost three games in eight but it was not enough and the Gas were eventually relegated to the Conference.
On Saturday Colchester manger Tony Humes told EADT24 that Okugonghae’s injury was a “massive blow” for his side and that he would look in the loan market for a replacement.
The central defender is eligible for Colchester’s away trip to high flyers MK Dons on Saturday and is likely to make his debut for the League One side.
