Sunderland striker Will Grigg scored a late winner against Grimsby Town in the EFL Trophy last night, which has caused an interesting reaction from fans of the club.

The Black Cats beat the League Two side 3-2 in the Group A match at the Stadium of Light, which came just hours after Jack Ross’ sacking.

Goals from Grimsby’s Matt Green and Moses Ogbu, and Sunderland’s Duncan Watmore and Marc McNulty left the game level at 2-2 with time running out.

Enter Grigg, who popped up at the back post with an 86th-minute header to give the hosts the victory and score just his second goal of the season.

The forward was signed in January to replace Josh Maja but has struggled for form at Sunderland–scoring just seven goals in 34 appearances for the Black Cats.

The 28-year-old has a phenomenal record in League One, having scored 100 goals in the division and scored 19 or more in a season on four occasions.

Grigg's poor form has meant he has been in and out of the starting XI under Ross this season but on the back of the Scotsman’s exit, the winner against Grimsby could kick start his season.

Following the goal, many fans of the club took to Twitter to suggest that one man in particular had been to blame for Grigg's drought.
